Presents “Mental Illness as a Life Sentence: The (Mis)treatment of Psychiatric Disorders in the Courtroom and Beyond”
Monday, November 7th from 4-5 p.m. in the Farrell Room
Philosophy PhD Candidate Kathryn Petrozzo ’17 explains how she turned undergraduate research into dissertation-level work. “Mental Illness as a Life Sentence: The (Mis)treatment of Psychiatric Disorders in the Courtroom and Beyond” draws on the philosophy of science, psychiatry, neuroscience, law, and disability studies to demonstrate the epistemic injustices concerning the treatment of individuals with mental illness in the clinic, in the courtroom, and in the greater public. It is her hope to provide accounts to help navigate these concerns, as well as provide positive frameworks for moving towards a more just conception of individuals with mental illness.
After the talk, Petrozzo offers advice about graduate study in Philosophy, Bioethics/Neuroethics, Philosophical Psychology, and related areas.
